Mumbai : An NGO, Keshav Srushti, has launched the ‘Maha Suryakumbh’, an innovative project promoting solar power, informed Dr. Alka Mandke, Chairperson of the NGO, in a press conference here on Saturday.

“Suryakumbha, the earlier version of the event, has been recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records and the ‘Limca Book of Records’ as the world’s largest solar cooking festival. Around three thousand school students had attended that event. Now, in ‘Maha Suryakumbha’ we are expecting tens of thousands of participants,” Dr. Mandke added.

“The ‘Maha Suryakumbh’ will be held at the NGO’s premises near Bhayandar in January 2015 where thousands of children will themselves make their own solar cookers out of easily available household material and cook together with the help of these cookers”, said Dr. Asmita Hegde, Chief of the Suryakumbha project.

The programme, which tries to promote solar energy as a substitute to the conventional energy through innovative action oriented event, is being organised along with Professor Rajendra Singh Oorja Abhiyaan (PRSOA), she said.

“Suryakumbh is intended to spark a revolution and transform the large pool of students into leaders who are aware, inspired and empowered,” she added.

“Since 2011, we have motivated over 8,500 participants, who have experienced the joy of solar cooking and have in turn shared the concept with several others”, Dr. Hegde said.
