A 30-year-old woman died on her way to the vaccination centre after he two-wheeler lost balance, as it swerved to avoid pothole in Kalyan. The incident happened on June 23.

The victim, Divya Katariya, a teacher with a private class, was travelling along with her brother-in-law, Arjun Bhanusali. They were heading to the vaccination centre when Bhanusali tried to overtake a vehicle. While doing so, he did not see the pothole filled with water, lost control and the duo fell off the vehicle.

“We were on our way to Fortis hospital and had taken the Kalyan-Padgha road. When we were about to take the Gandhari bridge, I tried to overtake a vehicle. However, I hit a pothole that was filled with water. I lost balance and we both fell”, said Bhanusali.

The duo was rushed to Aayush hospital. However, two days later Katariya succumbed to her injuries due to internal bleeding.

Senior inspector Dinesh Katke from Padgha police station said, “We received the papers of the incident only on Friday. As per primary investigations, Bhanusali was trying to overtake a vehicle. We suspect he was speeding due to which his bike skid. We do not believe the victim died because of a pothole. However, we are verifying all facts and interrogating Bhanusali. Accordingly, we will file a case of negligence”.

Meanwhile, officials from the Kalyan-Dombivli municipal corporation claim that the road has been repaired by the state public works department. FPJ tried calling PWD officials in Thane district, but they were unavailable for a comment.
