In a significant step towards making Kalamboli signal-free and ensuring smooth traffic movement, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) have jointly undertaken the Kalamboli Junction Development Project. The ambitious project, estimated at a cost of Rs 482 crore, is set to be completed within 18 months.

“The project includes the construction of eight flyover arms and two underpasses, which are expected to enhance connectivity and ease congestion in the region. The flyover arms are strategically designed to facilitate seamless movement for vehicles traveling in various directions. While Arm 1 is from Shil Phata to Steel Yard, Arm 2 will be from Pune to Shil Phata. Similarly, Arm 3 will be from Pune to Mumbai, Arms 4 & 5 from Mumbai to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA)/Pune, Arm 6 from Panvel to Mumbai, Arm 7 from JNPA to Pune and Arm 8 from Shil Phata to Pune,” a senior MSIDC official said.

Additionally, two underpasses will be constructed to improve connectivity between Panvel and Shil Phata, as well as Panvel and the Steel Yard.

Work on Phases 1, 2, 3, and 6 has already commenced, with three piling rigs operating round-the-clock to ensure the project stays on schedule. In light of ongoing construction, the Panvel exit from Kalamboli has been closed for six months, leading to a temporary diversion of traffic through Palaspe and Atal Setu.

Authorities are optimistic that once completed, the project will significantly enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion, benefitting thousands of commuters daily. Efforts are being made to ensure minimal disruption, and commuters are advised to plan their routes accordingly.

At an event in Panvel last year, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari had assured that its infrastructure would be upgraded since it is a crucial junction connecting Mumbai and Pune besides facilitating cargo movement to JNPA and vice versa.

The upgraded Kalamboli Junction will ensure seamless connectivity to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and JNPA from the major highways.

A two-level interchange, incorporating a directional/stack system, will facilitate signal-free traffic flow while the design will eliminate cross-conflict at grade, significantly reducing queuing delays for traffic from all routes.
