Mumbai: On International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of women who are not only excelling in their fields but are also breaking barriers and setting inspiring examples for future generations. The theme for this International Women’s Day is “Accelerate Action”.

One such remarkable story is of Shivangi Soni, a Senior Section Engineer at the EMU (suburban train) Carshed in Virar, Western Railway. With her dedication, hard work, and remarkable technical expertise, Shivangi is an exceptional example of a woman who is making significant contributions in the railway sector.

A Journey of Dedication and Excellence

Shivangi Soni’s career is a testament to what passion, determination, and intelligence can achieve, even in the most challenging of fields. Having completed her B.Tech in Electronics Engineering, Shivangi embarked on a path that would see her managing some of the most crucial and technical systems at the EMU (suburban train) Carshed.

The sector she works in is traditionally male-dominated, but her courage, boldness, and relentless drive have allowed her to rise to a leadership role in this environment. After completing her degree, Shivangi’s commitment to her work led her to the prestigious position of Junior Engineer at the EMU Carshed in Virar, a key operational unit for Western Railway. The responsibility she holds is immense, given the complexity and critical nature of the systems she oversees.

Managing Complex Systems with Precision

Shivangi’s role involves ensuring that the Automatic Warning System (AWS), an essential safety mechanism in trains, functions without error, providing real-time alerts to train operators to prevent accidents.

She also manages the Passenger Announcement and Information System (PAPIS), ensuring passengers remain informed about the latest updates related to train schedules and safety information.

Additionally, Shivangi ensures the CCTV surveillance system is maintained and operational, guaranteeing the security of both passengers and staff aboard the trains.

Her knowledge and expertise in handling these systems reflect her deep technical understanding and ability to manage the operations of highly sophisticated engineering solutions. Shivangi has become a vital link in ensuring the EMU rakes ( local trains ) run smoothly, safely, and efficiently.

Her work not only helps in the smooth functioning of the trains but also serves as a source of inspiration for other aspiring engineers, particularly women, who look to break barriers and pursue careers in technical fields.

Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Future Generations

Her journey is an example of what’s possible when women in the field of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) rise to the challenges they face head-on. In a profession where women are often underrepresented, she stands as a beacon of inspiration, showing that with hard work, dedication, and a clear vision, anything is possible. Her ability to balance the demands of a highly technical and critical role with her responsibilities as a leader reflects her remarkable versatility and capability.

"On International Women's Day, Shivangi’s story serves as an encouragement to all women aspiring to work in fields traditionally dominated by men, especially in engineering and technology. Her success is proof that gender should never be a barrier to success and that with determination, women can make profound impacts in any industry, including railways" said an official of WR.
