India’s first high speed rail corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is moving ahead at a steady pace, with construction activity intensifying across multiple segments. The 508 km project, spanning Maharashtra, Gujarat and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, is seen as a major leap in modern transport infrastructure.
Officials said work is progressing simultaneously on tunnels, viaducts, bridges and stations, bringing the ambitious project closer to reality.
Tunnel excavation reaches key milestone
A significant breakthrough has been achieved in the underground section of the corridor. Out of the planned 21 km tunnel, around 5 km has been fully excavated using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method.
With excavation completed in this stretch, work has now shifted to structural development. Inside the tunnel, drainage systems are being installed to safely channel seepage water. Waterproofing layers are also being added to prevent water entry and ensure long term durability.
Reinforcement structures are being placed to strengthen the tunnel before the final concrete lining is cast, giving it stability and a smooth finish. Equipment rooms are also being built to support operations and maintenance.
Strong progress across project
Beyond tunnelling, the project has recorded steady progress on other fronts. Over 343 km of viaduct work and 434 km of pier construction have been completed so far.
Infrastructure development includes 17 river bridges, five pre stressed concrete bridges and 13 steel bridges. More than 5.6 lakh noise barriers have been installed, while track bed construction has crossed 360 track km.
In Maharashtra’s Palghar district, two out of seven mountain tunnels have already achieved breakthrough. Meanwhile, work on stations in Gujarat is at an advanced stage, and construction has begun on elevated and underground stations in Mumbai.
With multiple components progressing together, the country’s first bullet train project is steadily moving towards completion.
