Acting on a tip off from whistleblower, the police had unearthed a kidney transplant scam at Hiranandani hospital in Powai

Mumbai: The Powai police has dispatched a team to Gujarat to further probe the kidney transplant scam at Hiranandani hospital.

On Thursday, acting on a tip off from whisle-blower Mahesh Tanna, the police had unearthed a kidney transplant scam at the Hiranandani hospital in Powai. Surat-based Brij Kishore Jaiswal (48) had procured fake documents and posed one Shobha Thakur (42), a domestic servant from Gujarat, as his wife for the transplant that was later halted.

According to a police official at Powai police station, “We are trying to gather more information about Thakur’s relatives and the agent who put her in touch with BrinjendraBisen (42), the mastermind of the kidney racket.”

Sandeep alias BrijendraBisen (42) is a repeated offender who was discharged in a kidney transplant scam in 2007.

Bisen is a resident of Grant Road was arrested again on Thursday in connection with the Hiranandani Hospital racket. Bisen managed to not only procure a marriage certificate for the donors but also created ration and Aadhar cards that showed them as residents of south Mumbai.

In October 2007, the Mumbai crime branch had arrested Chennai-based nephrologist Dr Palani Ravichandran (49) for his alleged role in an international kidney racket. Four of Dr Ravichandran’s agents from Mumbai were also arrested including Brijendra Bisen.

Bisen had then confessed to running the racket since 2002 and had conducted around 200 illegal kidney transplants.

Last week, the Powai police booked BrijendraBisen (42), Bharat Bhushan Sharma (48), Iqbal Mohammed Siddiqui (35) and KishanBrij Kishore Jaiswal (28) under Section 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation), Section 420 (cheating), Section 465 (forgery), Section 467 (Forgery of valuable security, will etc), Section 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) Section 471 (Using as genuine a forged (document or electronic record] and Section 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.
