Mumbai: On Thursday, the Powai police detained four people in connection with alleged an illegal kidney transplant racket at Hiranandani hospital in Powai. There is an ongoing racket of kidney transplant in the hospital, said source, who added that hospital staff members were hand in glove with those involved in the kidney racket in the city. “They lure people of slum pockets to sell their kidneys for huge money of Rs 5 to 10 lakh. Since they are poor so they agree to sell their organs,” said the source.
After getting the kidney transplanted they hardly give them money, said the sources. “The complainant, Mahesh Tanna, on certain reliable information approached Hiranandani hospital and informed the authority that the kidney transplantation operation of a patient Kishan Brijkishor Jaiswal be stopped as the donor is not his wife and documents submitted for kidney transfer are allegedly forged. Accordingly, the operation was stopped,” said DCP Vinayak Deshmukh.
During the course of investigation, four persons have been brought to police station and enquiries are being made.
The accused have been identified as Vaijendra Bisen (42), Bharat Bhushan Sharma (48), Iqbal Mohammed Siddiqui (35) and Kishan Brij Kishore Jaiswal (28). One of the accused Kishan is said to be the son of the patient. A case has been registered at Powai police station under Section 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation), Section 420 (cheating), Section 465 (forgery), Section 467 (Forgery of valuable security, will, etc), Section 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) Section 471 (Using as genuine a forged (document or electronic record] and Section 120 (b) ( criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal code.

Hospital clarification:
A husband and wife were slated to undergo a kidney transplant surgery at our hospital on Thursday. The hospital got to know that it may be a case of false identification and the couple are not related. The hospital administration immediately swung into action and cancelled the surgery. No organ was retrieved from the donor. We cooperated with the police and shared all the legal documents submitted by the couple to the Institutional Ethic Committee as part of the approval process (as mandated by law). The police are investigating the matter and the hospital is fully supporting the police investigate the matter thoroughly. We are bringing this matter to the attention of other healthcare service providers and health authorities as well so that such fraudulent behavior is checked and sincere donors and recipients do not suffer because of the wrong doings of some. The hospital, continuing the legacy of its illustrious founder, adheres to high standard of ethics and works for the betterment of society.
