Mumbai: The Orient Club at Girgaon Chowpatty celebrated its 125th anniversary on Saturday, May 3.

The club, housed in a building constructed in the classical architectural style, was created as an exclusive club for the who's who of the times. Members included senior judges, Indian Civil Service (now IAS) officers, members of royal families, and baronets. Prince Aga Khan, the hereditary spiritual head of the Ismaili Muslims, Sayajirao Gaikwad from the Baroda royal family, and Sir Cowasjee Jehangir were among its members.

These esteemed members have contributed to the club's rich tapestry of cultural, social, and recreational activities, fostering an environment where friendships have blossomed, talents have been developed, and countless lives have been enriched, the club said in a statement. As The Orient Club celebrates this significant milestone, it stands as a beacon of excellence, preserving its heritage while continuing to serve as a hub for recreation, culture, and community, the statement added.

Established on May 1, 1900, as 'Villa Marina', the club building is now a protected structure in the city's architectural heritage list. With its classy interiors filled with vintage furniture and decor, the club has facilities like halls, a restaurant, guest rooms, bar, facilities for indoor sports, and an open-air lounge overlooking the Queen's Necklace (Marine Drive). A commemorative booklet was released during the anniversary celebrations.
