HC asks BMC to explain bill sent to Jaslok Hospital

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has asked the municipal corporation to explain the provision under which it has charged the Jaslok Hospital Rs. 63,43,470 lakh after almost 34 years for ‘misusing’ water. A division bench headed by justice A.M. Khanwilkar opined that the demand of civic body was barred by the limitation and asked it to file an affidavit explaining the provisions. In April 2007, the BMC sent a notice to the hospital demanding Rs 63,43,470 lakh from them alleging that the hospital had misused water. The corporation contended that water was given to the hospital on cheaper rate for common use, not for air cooling which is chargeable at a higher rate.
