Mumbai: The city woke up draped in saffron, white, and green on Friday as the 79th Independence Day unfolded in a heady mix of tradition, pride, and celebration. From the grand halls of power to street corners and railway stations, Mumbai resonated with patriotic songs, fluttering flags, and smiling faces.
The state’s official celebrations began at Mantralaya, where Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis hoisted the Tricolour against a backdrop of rousing applause. In his address, he saluted the sacrifices of freedom fighters and hailed Maharashtra as a driving force in the nation’s progress. “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s growth story is unstoppable and Maharashtra is at its heart,” he said.
At another venue, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde led celebrations by hoisting the national flag, urging citizens to work together to strengthen unity and foster development. “Every Independence Day is a reminder of the courage that built this nation and the responsibility we all share to keep it strong,” he told the gathering.
Across the political aisle, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray unfurled the Tricolour in a simple yet spirited ceremony.
The party’s secretary Milind Narvekar marked the day in his own distinctive style, celebrating with children and his beloved pet dogs.
Beyond the political stage, Mumbai’s public spaces brimmed with patriotic fervour. At the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), the Indian Army band filled the historic station with stirring martial tunes.
Schools, housing societies, and community groups joined in with their own celebrations, from cultural performances and street plays to flag-hoisting ceremonies on terraces and playgrounds. Street vendors added a festive touch, selling tricolour kites, badges, and sweets in every shade of the flag.
Yesterday, on the even of Independence day , the city’s skyline glowed in patriotic colours, from heritage buildings in South Mumbai bathed in saffron, white and green lights to the modern glass towers of BKC reflecting the hues of the Tricolour. The mood was unmistakable: pride, unity, and the joy of being part of India’s journey.
