Thane: Former Shiv Sena corporator Sanjay Bhoir from Thane’s Balkum area became a victim of cybercrime after his mobile number and WhatsApp account were hacked on Friday. Fraudsters misused his WhatsApp to send messages to several of his contacts, asking for Rs 45,000.
The scam came to light the same day, prompting Bhoir to file a complaint at the Kapurbawdi police station. Following his report, the police registered a case and initiated an investigation to track down the culprits behind the hack.
Bhoir was alerted to the fraud when multiple acquaintances received suspicious messages from his WhatsApp account requesting money, reported Times of India. Concerned about the unusual request, several of them reached out to him on an alternate number to confirm its authenticity. This is when Bhoir realised that his WhatsApp had been compromised.
Upon discovering the hack, Bhoir quickly clarified that he does not use any mobile applications for financial transactions and had not made any such calls or requests for money. Worried about the misuse of his identity, he immediately approached the police to lodge a formal complaint.
Malicious Link Likely Led To WhatsApp Hack
The police suspect that the hack may have occurred due to a malicious link that Bhoir might have unknowingly clicked. However, the exact method used by the fraudsters will be determined through further investigation.
Cybercrime incidents like these have been on the rise, with fraudsters frequently targeting public figures to exploit their contacts. Police officials have urged citizens to be cautious about clicking on unknown links or sharing sensitive information online.
