Eknath Shinde Hails UNESCO Tag For 12 Shivaji Maharaj Forts As Historic Honour For Maharashtra

The forts added to the prestigious list include Salher, Shivneri, Lohgad, Khanderi, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala, Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg, and Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu. The nomination proposal for these sites was submitted to UNESCO last year.

Twelve forts associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj have been officially included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The news has been hailed as historic by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who expressed joy over the global recognition of the Maratha warrior king’s glorious legacy.

The forts added to the prestigious list include Salher, Shivneri, Lohgad, Khanderi, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala, Vijaydurg, Sindhudurg, and Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu. The nomination proposal for these sites was submitted to UNESCO last year.

Deputy CM Shinde emphasized that these forts, which witnessed the rise of Shivaji Maharaj's Swarajya (self-rule), are living symbols of Maharashtra’s valiant and rich history. “Their inclusion in the World Heritage List is a proud achievement for the state and a historic step towards taking Shivaji Maharaj’s radiant legacy to the global stage,” he said.

He expressed sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, and the Archaeological Survey of India for their efforts in making this achievement possible. Shinde also recalled that he had personally followed up on the nomination process during his tenure as Chief Minister, said a statement released by Raigad administration.

Reaffirming the state government’s commitment to preserving and conserving these forts, Shinde stated that Maharashtra will ensure these heritage sites continue to serve as sources of inspiration for generations to come. He also extended heartfelt congratulations to all Shivaji Maharaj devotees and the people of Maharashtra for this international recognition.
