Mumbai: Deputy Inspector General of Police Sunil Paraskar, who is accused of raping a city model, has been suspended with the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan giving his accent on Tuesday night to the recommendation of the Home Department.

A court in Mumbai had recently granted Paraskar pre-arrest bail, observing that the complainant’s behaviour and her email exchange with him suggested consent. Paraskar’s lawyer, too, had made out a case in the court during the hearing on the anticipatory bail plea that the DIG was in a consensual relationship with the victim.

This claim, in turn, had put a question mark over the conduct of the DIG, especially his hobnobbing with the model who was subject of a police inquiry. Paraskar, by his own admission, had met her frequently, exchanged emails, accosted her around the city, recommended flats for photo shoot etc. The 25-year-old model has alleged that Paraskar (57) had molested and sexually assaulted her on two occasions in December 2013. According to her, she had met Paraskar first in 2012 when he was Additional Commissioner of Police with regard to a case.
