MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on Friday directed the Maharashtra government to release the consignment of ghutka worth Rs 2.5 crore belonging to Dhariwal Industries, on the condition that the company will not bring products of tobacco to the State.
A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Anoop Mohta was hearing a petition, filed by M Dhariwal challenging the seizure by the Customs. In November last year, Dhariwal Industries was exporting a consignment of ghutka, manufactured in Gujarat to the UAE. The Food Safety Commissioner had issued a letter to the Customs Commissioner directing that the export or import of ghutka and pan masala should not be allowed from any port of the state. The Customs Department had then seized the consignment at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, located at Nhava Seva. The company then approached the court challenging the seizure.
