As monsoon showers continue to batter the city, Mumbai’s pothole problem has made its dreaded annual comeback, causing slowdowns, frustration and chaos for commuters. On Monday, Mumbai Traffic Police issued an advisory alerting motorists about a large pothole on the southbound slope of the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) connector, which has severely slowed down vehicular movement in the area.

The advisory read, “Traffic movement around BKC connector slope South Bound has been slowed down due to pothole.” Motorists have been urged to follow real-time updates and take alternate routes where possible.

Man dies in accident due to pothole-ridden road
A 59-year-old man lost his life after a dumper truck rammed into his two-wheeler from behind, reportedly due to potholes near the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road on Saturday afternoon. The Powai police have arrested the 25-year-old truck driver and are investigating the poor condition of the pothole-ridden stretch.

Recurring Problem with No Permanent Fix

The resurfacing of potholes every year during the monsoon season has become a persistent issue for Mumbai’s civic authorities. Despite repeated promises of better roadworks, durable materials and swift repairs, citizens are once again grappling with bumpy rides, long delays, and vehicle damage.

From June to mid-July, Mumbai saw a surge in pothole complaints, with a total of 6,758 cases reported. Andheri West (K/West ward) led the count with 488 complaints, followed by Bhandup (S ward) with 453. Interestingly, officials pointed out a significant drop in the amount of mastic material used for pothole repairs compared to last year.

Commuter Anger Mounts

Frustrated Mumbaikars have taken to social media to share images and videos of cratered roads, demanding accountability and long-term solutions. As more showers are predicted in the coming days, experts warn that the situation may worsen before it gets better.
