Note ban has compelled them to ask for PDCs from clients as they are facing change problem
Mumbai: The Modi government’s demonetisation move has become a headache for contractors in the city as it has compelled them to ask for post-dated cheques from their clients as they are facing change problems for purchasing construction materials. The problem has also forced the contractors to hold back the wages of their labourers.
Bilaal Khan, a contractor, said: “It is getting difficult for us ever since demonetisation has started as we are asking for post-dated cheques from our clients. We are forced to purchase construction material on credit as neither us nor the suppliers have change.”
Several labourers are also running out of money and are finding it difficult to run their household. “We are not getting ‘Kharchi’ from the contractors as they do not have lower denomination notes. We are also facing the difficulty in running house,” said Ebu, labour at construction site.
Iqbal Khan, a contractor with Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority – Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (MHADA) said, “We are not able to pay wages of our labours as we are short of lower denomination notes and asking them to take old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 so that they can deposit in their account.”
The same problem is being faced by carpenters, plumbers and etc. to get change for the new currency of Rs 2000 notes and to pay wages of the labour working under them.
