Covid-19 cases across Mumbai and Maharashtra dropped by 43 per cent and 49 per cent respectively during the last 24 hours. It was after thirty-four days, that the city recorded less than 500 cases on Monday, with 431 new cases, increasing the total count to 11,15,473 cases now.

The previous cases of less than 500 were recorded on May 30 when 318 cases were reported. Meanwhile, two people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 19,619. A 68-year-old female and a 71-year-old male, both with comorbidities died in the city.

Maharashtra recorded 1,515 fresh cases and three Covid deaths during the last 24 hours, pushing its tally to 79,86,811, with 1,47,943 so far. Dr Ishwar Gilada, consultant, infectious diseases and secretary general, Organised Medicine Academic Guild, said there is a need to continue vigilance with continued genome sequencing and producing a new vaccine that can provide protection against all the strains prevalent now and possible variants in near future.

As of now, no strict mandates are required. Masking indoors and in crowded public places should remain the norm, for now, he said.
