Central Railway Announces Dedicated Compartment For Senior Citizens In Mumbai Locals |

In a step towards enhancing comfort and safety for elderly commuters, Central Railway has introduced a specially redesigned compartment exclusively for senior citizens on the Mumbai suburban network. This marks the first such initiative on an Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) rake in the region.

The renovation was carried out by the Matunga Workshop following directives from the Railway Board to make public transport more inclusive and commuter-friendly. The new senior citizen coach has been created by converting the middle luggage section of the sixth coach from the Mumbai end of the rake.

Aimed at reducing the physical challenges faced by elderly passengers, particularly during peak travel hours, the compartment features 13 ergonomically designed seats to ensure easy access and enhanced comfort. Stainless steel tubular partitions have been installed, allowing better visibility and smoother passenger movement. These are further equipped with sight-level panels and integrated grab poles for added support.

Additional safety features include knurled vertical grab poles positioned near the doorways and emergency ladders placed below both doors to facilitate quick evacuation if needed. Aesthetic improvements such as vinyl-wrapped interiors also contribute to a cleaner and more inviting environment.

“This prototype is a significant move towards inclusive mobility,” said a Central Railway spokesperson. “It addresses the long-pending concerns of senior citizens and reinforces our focus on passenger-centric infrastructure.”

Central Railway plans to progressively upgrade all EMU rakes in the suburban network to include senior citizen compartments. The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ larger mission to make train travel safer, more accessible, and comfortable for vulnerable passengers, ensuring public transport remains inclusive for all.
