Mumbai: Deven Bharti has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Mumbai Police by the Maharashtra government. Bharti, a 1994-batch Indian Police Services (IPS) officer, is currently serving as the Special Commissioner of Police, Mumbai.

Bharti has served at several important postings in Mumbai. In January 2023, he was appointed as Mumbai's first special police commissioner. He was one of the longest-serving joint commissioners of police (law & order) of the capital city of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra Government's Notification:

Bharti also headed the Maharashtra State Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). According to reports, Bharti has also been involved in the 26/11 terror attack probe.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar retired on April 30. Phansalkar is a 1989 batch IPS officer. According to reports, current NIA chief Sadanand Date and his batchmate Sanjay Kumar Verma were also in line to become the next commissioner of Mumbai Police. However, it was unlikely that the centre would relieve Date of his duties as NIA chief.

Meanwhile, 1993-batch officer Archana Tyagi's name also surfaced as the next Mumbai Police commissioner. Notably, till now no woman has headed the Mumbai Police.
