Mumbai: On EID day, Afroz Khan, UN's Champion of the Earth along with MLA Bharti Lavekar, Mumbai Police and Bollywood celebrities Randeep Hooda and Karanvir Bhora cleaned up 20 tons of plastic from mangroves at Lokhandwala, Andheri West. Around 200 volunteers cleaned the mangroves for 1 hour. MLA Bharti Lavekar along with Afroz Khan has built a Bio Fence of 800 feet at Lokhandwala, Andheri West to keep the mangroves safe from plastic waste. Mickey Mehta, fitness guru and columnist was also part of this cleanup campaign.
“We did two things today, first one is building a bio fence of 800 feet at Lonkhandwala, Andheri (W) so that mangroves will be safe from plastic waste. Our 200 volunteers along with MLA Bharti Lavekar a Bollywood actor Karanvir Bhora cleaned plastic waste of 20 tons at Lokhandwala, Andheri West. Our mission is to educate, diversify, the environment moment worldwide,” said Afroz Khan, UN's Champion of the earth.
He has done several clean-up projects in Mumbai and because of which he was awarded the 2016 “Champion of the Earth- Inspiration and Action” award by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and been voted “Indian of the Year, 2017” by CNN News18. The Bharatiya Janata Party, MLA Bharti Levakar showed full support to this cleanup campaign along with full support from Mumbai Police.
