Mumbai : As per the new Government of Maharashtra Resolution (GR) making ward-level segregation of garbage is mandatory, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to choose one ward out of its 24, to start the project on a trial basis.
Sources from the civic body informed that this will be a ward with limited garbage generation, like the A ward or the D ward. Once the BMC is able to set up a mechanism to segregate waste successfully in this ward on a pilot basis, it will replicate the model in other wards.
The GR states that a waste segregation facility must be started in every ward along with centers to process wet waste. Only dry waste will be sent away to the dumpyard.
Vijay Balamwar, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, solid waste management, said, “The project will require setting up of these plants and we will have to identify areas where we can set it up. We will also have to conduct awareness campaigns for household waste segregation. It is not possible to start this project pan Mumbai yet.”
Sources said the civic body was mulling over whether to select wards with excessive waste generation for the pilot project. However, as this requires many new waste bins, garbage collection vans and a dedicated staff, sources informed that the civic body will test its plan on a relatively ‘easy’ ward.
Balamwar said this project is likely to kick start within a few weeks.
The GR, which was issued on February 15, also lists guidelines for issuing permissions for new buildings. It is necessary to have facilities to segregate garbage at the building level before permissions are given for construction.
