Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has banned the sale of Chinese and fried food on pavements stalls.Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta issued a notice on Tuesday that fried food items cannot be sold on pavements. He also banned food items that use water as an ingredient and don’t require cooking, such as pani-puri.

This information was confirmed by Padmaja Keskar, BMC’s Executive Health Officer. She said that any food which uses water and is not boiled or cooked will not be allowed to be sold.

Devendra Amberkar, leader of the Opposition in the BMC, had written to Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh demanding that stalls selling Chinese food outside schools should be banned.

Amberkar had pointed out that these stalls use a taste maker containing Mo-nosodium Glutamate (MSG) while preparing Chinese food, which is extremely harmful. Children consume this food daily without being aware of its ill effects.

Meanwhile, earlier in June, the BMC had come down heavily on street food stalls after Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria, which is also hazardous to health, was found in the water samples used to prepare these foods.
