Mumbai: Bhendi Bazaar witnessed festive celebrations on Monday as thousands of members of the Dawoodi Bohra community gathered to mark Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed.
Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin leads Milad-un-Nabi procession at Raudat Tahera Complex
On the eve of the occasion, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the 53rd leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community, presided over a procession at the Raudat Tahera Complex. Children dressed in colourful attire and themed displays featured in the procession, while community bands added to the festive atmosphere.
In the morning, community members assembled at local masjids and community centres to listen to a recorded sermon by the late 52nd leader, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin. The sermon focused on the life, teachings and legacy of Prophet Mohammed and also featured audio excerpts from a sermon by the late 51st leader, Syedna Taher Saifuddin. The Raudat Tahera houses the tomb of the 51st Syedna.
Raudat Tahera holds special significance for Dawoodi Bohra community
Community member Husain Poonawala said the Prophet’s teachings on compassion, justice and humanity continued to guide members in their daily lives and encouraged them to contribute positively to society.
Similar Milad-un-Nabi observances were held by Dawoodi Bohra communities across the world. Other Muslim sects in India will celebrate the festival on August 26. In many parts of the world, the commemoration will be held on August 25. The dates differ because some sects follow a fixed date in the annual calender, other groups decide the day based on the sighting of the moon.
