Mumbai: A horrific road accident occurred on the Atal Setu, the crucial bridge connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, early Friday morning when a speeding car rammed into a dumper truck from behind. The impact was so intense that the car was crushed and became lodged in the rear of the dumper. The driver, identified as Puneet Singh Devendra Singh Majra (28), suffered critical injuries and later succumbed to them during treatment.

According to the Sewree Police, the incident took place around 2 AM near Pole Number 8.1 on the Atal Setu. Puneet, a resident of Chembur, was headed toward Panvel when he rear-ended a dumper that was also traveling in the same direction. The force of the collision caused severe injuries to his head and multiple parts of his body. He was rushed to a hospital in Kamothe, where he was declared dead during treatment. The dumper driver also sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment, police said.

A preliminary investigation by the Sewree Police suggests that over-speeding and negligent driving on Puneet’s part led to the accident. The dumper was moving in the same lane when the car, traveling at high speed, failed to maintain a safe distance and crashed into it.

Based on the dumper driver’s statement, a case has been registered against the deceased under relevant sections for rash and negligent driving. However, police are also examining CCTV footage and awaiting the vehicle’s technical inspection report to determine whether any mechanical failure contributed to the crash.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about speeding on the Atal Setu, which, despite being a state-of-the-art infrastructure project, has seen multiple accidents since its opening. Police have urged motorists to follow speed limits and exercise caution while driving, especially during early morning or late-night hours when traffic monitoring is limited.
