App-based cab services across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region were affected for the third consecutive day on Thursday, as a section of drivers continued their strike, causing disruptions to daily commutes. The agitation, which began on Monday, is showing signs of intensifying, with sources indicating that further escalation is likely on Friday. The ongoing strike has led to significant travel difficulties not only in Mumbai but also in its suburbs and neighboring cities such as Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Pune, and Nashik. Commuters in these areas, especially daily travelers to Mumbai for work in government, semi-government, private, and corporate sectors, are facing serious hardships due to the disruption in app-based cab services.
App-based cab drivers, protesting under the banner of various unions, have voluntarily suspended operations to press their demands. “The strike has gained momentum and now spans major urban centers like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur,” said a union leader. “Drivers who are still working are being requested by fellow drivers to join the protest and amplify the movement.”
According to the Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha, the strike is being carried out lawfully, following collective consultation with the driver community. “We have received support from drivers. Our aim now is a complete shutdown of all app-based cab services,” a union representative said.
Meanwhile, Uber has reached out to its driver-partners via text messages, acknowledging the challenges faced in Mumbai and Pune. The company appealed to drivers to continue providing services, citing strong rider demand. It also encouraged drivers who feel threatened to contact the nearest police station or use the emergency "112" feature in the app. “Your presence on the road is valuable,” Uber stated in its message, urging drivers to prioritize safety while continuing operations.
