Navi Mumbai: The Kharghar Hill Mayor Marathon, organised by the Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC), has received recognition from the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), giving the event a national and international standing, organisers said at a press conference on Thursday.

Marathon receives AIMS recognition

The marathon, scheduled to be held on August 23, has already attracted more than 6,000 registrations. Organisers said the AIMS certification of the marathon route would allow participating runners to receive certificates recognised for national and international marathon events.

The organisers also claimed that the 42-km hill marathon being held in Panvel is the first of its kind in India.

The press conference was attended by Panvel mayor Nitin Patil, chief promoter Paresh Thakur, deputy mayor Pramila Patil, House Leader Prakash Binedar, Standing Committee chairman Baban Mukadam, Women and Child Welfare Committee chairperson Mamta Mhatre, Leader of Opposition Arvind Mhatre and chairpersons of various ward committees.

Preparations and safety measures

The organisers said the registration fee for the Kharghar Hill Marathon has been kept comparatively low despite the event having AIMS certification. They said the fee is significantly lower than that charged for several other AIMS-certified marathons.

Mayor Nitin Patil, along with PMC officials, inspected the marathon route and reviewed preparations for the event. Patil directed the civic administration to give priority to the safety of participants and ensure adequate arrangements along the route.

“The marathon will put Panvel on the map among athletes from across the country, and therefore safety arrangements must be given utmost importance,” officials quoted Patil as saying.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Ganesh Shete, Deputy Commissioner Dr Vaibhav Vidhate and other civic officials and employees were present during the inspection.
