The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted 5 colleges in Maharashtra which includes three from Mumbai academic autonomy. This takes the tally if autonomous institutes in Maharashtra to 73.

According to Hindustan Times, Mumbai colleges to receive autonomy are RA Podar College of Commerce and Economics in Matunga; College of Social Work, Nirmala Niketan (CSWNN) in Churchgate; and MMP Shah Women’s College in Matunga. The first two colleges come under the University of Mumbai (MU). The third one is affiliated to Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women’s University. The newly turned autonomous institutes said they plan to update their syllabi and start new courses.

Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Matunga, earlier known as University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), became the first institute in the city to be granted autonomy in 2002. An autonomous university typically refers to a university that exercises independent control over its day-to-day operations and curriculum. It is generally associated with universities or institutions and implies that the sponsoring state does not have control over academic matters of the school.
