Mumbai : A 14-year-old boy committed suicide by hanging at his residence in a slum area of Seven Bungalows on Friday afternoon, Versova police said.

No suicide note has been found and the police are now recording statements to find out the reason for the drastic step.

Dr Harish Shetty, who runs a suicide helpline (18602662345), told FPJ, “Depression must be the cause of it. It’s more common than Dengue in Mumbai. The BMC urgently needs to do something about it. It’s a serious health issue.”

Versova police said the deceased, Ganesh Gangale, took the extreme step at his residence in Sagar Kutir slum sometime before 1.15pm by using his mother’s saree.

His mother, a domestic help was not at home.

“We suspect no foul play. Ganesh studied in the VIII standard of Chakravarty Ashok Samrat municipality school and had bunked school today.

“He took the extreme step in the absence of his parents and brother. His father, a labourer, said Ganesh was short tempered. We are recording statements of his neighbours but nobody wants to speak on the issue,” said an official from Versova police station.
