Thane: The situation in the Bhiwandi Lok Sabha constituency had reached such a pass that it required the intervention of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, to avert a revolt against the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) candidate Kapil Patil.

The three candidates, the Kunbi Sena leader Vishwanath Patil, the rebel Shiv Sainik, Suresh Gopinath Mhatre alias Balya Mama and Yogesh Kathore, Independent candidates, were forced to withdraw their nominations.

Sena worker Balya Mama and Congress leader Vishwanath Patil had rebelled and left their respective parties to contest as Independents, as they were contesting against their party candidates. The third candidate, Kathore, also withdrew his nomination.

According to sources, Balya Mama wanted a Sena ticket from Bhiwandi but the party gave the seat to BJP candidate Patil. Having been denied a ticket by the Sena, Balya Mama was trying to get a Congress ticket and had met Congress president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi for this purpose. However, the Congress announced Suresh Taware as their candidate.

Vishwanath Patil also wanted a Congress ticket from Bhiwandi and was upset the party had given the ticket to former MP Taware. In 2014, Patil had got a Congress ticket but was defeated by BJP MP Kapil Patil. In 2009, Congress had given a ticket to Taware, who had won then.

Talking to The Free Press Journal, Vishwanath Patil said, “On Thursday night, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called us in Mumbai to support the BJP in the Bhiwandi Lok Sabha election. Along with my workers, I reached the CM’s residence. We had put forth all our demands before him, such as water scarcity, farmers’ problems and reservation for the Kunbi community, among others.”

Balya Mama said, “I withdrew my nomination papers having been requested by Sena workers and leaders to do so. I will work to defeat Kapil Patil in the election.” He further alleged that Kapil had always booked fake cases against Sena workers in Bhiwandi. Kapil Patil humiliated the Sainiks during the five years he was the MP.

He said, “I do not oppose the BJP but oppose the BJP candidate, Kapil Patil. Milind Palsule, public relations officer, Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation, said,”After the withdrawal of these three candidates, there are 15 candidates who are now in the fray.”
