World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is observed every year on March 21. Down Syndrome is a neurodevelopment disorder that can affect a person mentally and physically. It makes communication and social interactions challenging for a person.

The day was started to raise awareness about the inherent right of people suffering from Down syndrome to be accepted and included as valued and equal members of the community. On a significant day, let's learn about Down Syndrome and why this day is observed.

What is Down Syndrome?

Down Syndrome is a genetic condition, which means it is caused by a change in an individual's genetic material. In most cases, individuals with Down syndrome have three copies of chromosomes instead of the usual two, a condition known as trisomy 21.

The extra development of chromosomes affects the development of a person's body and brain, which leads to developmental delays and intellectual disability. People suffering from this syndrome share some common characteristics, but each individual with this disability has unique abilities and strengths. Down syndrome is not typically inherited, which means it is not passed down from parents to children.

Theme of World Down Syndrome 2025

The theme of World Down Syndrome Day 2025 is "improve Our Support Systems," This theme highlights the importance of strengthening inclusive support systems to ensure individuals with Down syndrome receive the proper care, education, and opportunities they deserve. It also encourages governments to improve support systems and provide facilities for people with Down syndrome.

History of World Down Syndrome Day

French physician Jerome Lejeune identified Down syndrome as a chromosomal condition (an extra copy of chromosomes), which is now known as trisomy 21. The Brazilian Federation of the Association of Down Syndrome started a global awareness campaign in collaboration with Down Syndrome International and its members.

In 2011, the United Nations recognised it and passed a resolution to observe World Down Syndrome annually and later in 2012, The UN General Assembly declared March 21st as World Down Syndrome Day.
