Acclaimed dancer and Instagram creator Rukmini Vijayakumar recently stirred up conversations on social media after posting a video of herself performing sumo squats while wearing a saree and lifting a 30-kilogram barbell-paired with high heels.

Her intent, as expressed in the video caption, was to challenge stereotypes and show that women can lift weights even in traditional attire like sarees. “It was a fun challenge,” she wrote, inspiring many for blending strength with grace. However, it was not the saree that sparked controversy, it was the heels.

Netizens raise red flags over gym footwear

Soon after the video went viral, a wave of concern washed over the comments section. Several users praised her elegance and strength but urged her to be cautious.

One concerned follower commented, “It is not safe to lift weights with high heels. Please refrain from doing it. Otherwise, all OK, very beautiful lady.” Another remarked, “Looking great in this outfit at the gym, but it's not safe with such heels. Your ankle may get injured if there is little imbalance... don't do it again for your own good.”

Experts and enthusiasts explain the risk

The discussion quickly turned technical as fitness enthusiasts and professionals chimed in. A detailed comment outlined the physiological risks. “The added barbell weight on your shoulders already compresses your spine and demands strict posture. Wearing heels tilts your pelvis anteriorly, potentially increasing lumbar spine stress, neck strain from poor head alignment, and knee joint pressure-especially on the patella," an user commented.

Another user pleaded respectfully, “With due respect to whatever you do, please don't influence people to do such things with heels. They are extremely dangerous for the knees. You too take care!”

While Rukmini’s video was undoubtedly a celebration of strength and grace, it also served as a reminder that fitness trends, especially those shared on social media, carry influence and responsibility.
