In the world of Indian fashion, Sabyasachi Mukherjee has become synonymous with timeless bridal elegance, intricate craftsmanship, and an eye for detailing. Among his many legendary creations, one piece stands out-the 'Bipasha blouse,' an iconic bridal design that has made waves across the fashion industry.

The blouse was originally designed for Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu during her audition for the film Raavan, directed by Mani Ratnam. “We used to call her Bonnie in Kolkata,” Sabyasachi recalled, referring to the actress by her nickname. Although the scene featuring the blouse was ultimately cut from the film, Sabyasachi decided to preserve the design and not let the effort go to waste.

A bold and elegant statement

The blouse featured a daring plunging neckline and elegant arm coverage-both bold and subtly sensual. “It was quite sexual for its time,” Sabyasachi admitted, referring to its striking cut. Despite its boldness, it maintained a sense of refinement, making it a standout in bridal fashion.

Over time, the blouse gained immense popularity. Brides across the world desired its unique blend of sensuality and sophistication. Reports suggest that between 25,000 to 30,000 pieces were sold in the initial years alone. Eventually, Sabyasachi’s atelier had sold over 250,000 versions of the blouse, cementing its place in bridal fashion history.

An emotional connection

Years later, when Bipasha was preparing for her wedding to actor Karan Singh Grover, she visited Sabyasachi’s store and was stunned to see the blouse that bore her name. “She looked at the blouse and exclaimed, ‘Oh my God, it’s got my name written all over it!", Sabyasachi chuckled and replied, “Quite literally.”

From its humble beginnings as a one-time creation to its evolution into a must-have bridal piece, the 'Bipasha blouse' remains one of the most sought-after designs in Indian bridal fashion. The blouse is a testament to Sabyasachi’s unmatched ability to blend tradition with modernity, capturing the essence of modernity, elegance and love.
