As the Islamic New Year begins with the sighting of the crescent moon, Muslims around the world observe Muharram, the first and one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar. Unlike typical New Year celebrations, Muharram is a time of mourning and reflection, especially for Shia Muslims, who remember the sacrifice of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

When is Muharram 2025?

The date of Muharram varies each year, as it depends on the sighting of the moon, which often causes uncertainty around the exact holiday. In 2025, the moon was sighted in India on June 26, marking the start of the new Islamic year on Friday, June 27.

Based on this, Yaum-e-Ashura, the 10th and most important day of Muharram, will be observed on Sunday, July 6, 2025. The Indian government has also declared July 6 as the official public holiday for Muharram.

Significance of Muharram

Muharram is not only the start of the Islamic New Year but also one of the four sacred months in Islam where warfare and conflict are traditionally forbidden. The word "Muharram" itself means "forbidden", symbolising peace and sanctity.

The month holds particular importance because of the Battle of Karbala, a pivotal moment in Islamic history that occurred in 680 CE. On the 10th of Muharram, Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), was martyred along with his loyal companions by the army of Yazid I.

Hussain’s refusal to pledge allegiance to a tyrannical ruler and his unwavering commitment to justice and truth turned Karbala into a powerful symbol of resistance and righteousness.

For Shia Muslims, Muharram is a time of intense mourning and devotion. Majlis (religious gatherings), processions, and recitations of elegies are common, as is fasting, particularly on Ashura.

Sunni Muslims also observe the day by fasting and remembering Prophet Moses' (Musa) victory over Pharaoh, as per Islamic traditions.
