Syama Prasad Mukherjee was an Indian politician, barrister, and academician who served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet. He was born in a Bengali Hindu family on July 6, 1901, in Kolkata. He is known to many for having a fallout with Nehru. He had protested against the Nehru-Liaquat Pact and later resigned from Nehru's cabinet. On June 22, 1953 Syama Prasad Mukherjee was diagnosed with a heart attack and he died a day later on June 23. Dr. Shayam Prasad Mukherjee's father, Ashutosh Mukherjee, was a highly regarded lawyer called the Bengal Tiger who served as the Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University. His mother was Lady Jogmaya Devi Mukhopadhyay. Syama Prasad Mukherjee had three siblings: Rama Prasad, Uma Prasad, and Bama Prasad.
He has three sisters as well: Kamala, Amala, and Ramala. Syama completed her English degree with first-class honors in 1921, followed by an M.A. in 1923 and a B.L. in 1924. He was appointed as a fellow of the Senate in 1924 following his father's passing. He then traveled to England in 1926 to attend Lincoln's Inn and became a Barrister in 1927. Syama Prasad Mukherjee married Sudha Devi in 1922 and had five children, but his wife passed away from double pneumonia soon after in 1933 or 1934.
He was elected as a member of the Legislative Council
He was chosen to be a member of the Legislative Council of Bengal as a candidate from the Indian National Congress to represent Calcutta University, but he stepped down the following year when Congress opted to boycott the legislature. Mookerjee began his political journey modestly in 1929 as a member of the legislative council. He then ran for office as an independent candidate and won the election. He served as the Finance Minister of Bengal Province from 1941 to 1942.
