Citizens of Pune are terrified with the rise of new disease in the city. Guillain-Barré Syndrome GBS), an immunological nerve disorder, seems to have taken a rise with 59 cases so far.

Meanwhile, as city grapples with an unprecedented outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), an immunological nerve disorder linked with contaminated water and food, residents in the affected and nearby areas are blaming the PMC for failing to provide access to safe water to the residents. GBS is a syndrome not many are aware of. Let's understand the causes, symptoms of treatment involved.

What is GBS & what causes it?

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disorder in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system connects the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. This condition can lead to weakness, numbness, tingling, and in severe cases, paralysis.

GBS is often triggered by an immune response to infections, such as Campylobacter jejuni (a bacterial infection linked to undercooked poultry), viral infections like Zika virus, cytomegalovirus, or COVID-19. In rare cases, it can be linked to vaccinations, surgery, or trauma, which may overstimulate the immune system. Occasionally, no specific trigger is identified, but the immune system still mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, leading to the symptoms of GBS.

According to Dr. Lomesh Bhirud, Neurologist and Neuro-Interventionalist Ruby Hall Clinic Pune, GBS typically starts with tingling or numbness in the fingers and toes. It may progress to muscle weakness in the legs and eventually spread to the arms and face. In severe cases, it can cause difficulty walking, speaking, swallowing, or even breathing. If symptoms appear suddenly or worsen quickly, it’s crucial to see a doctor immediately.

Why CSF tests are done specifically to detect GBS?

According to Dr. Lomesh, A CSF test, done through a lumbar puncture, checks for increased protein levels in the spinal fluid. This is a key marker of GBS and helps doctors confirm the diagnosis while ruling out other possible conditions like infections or meningitis.

While GBS itself isn’t directly preventable, reducing your risk of infections that might trigger it is key.

1. Wash your hands often and maintain good hygiene.

2. Avoid undercooked poultry and unpasteurized dairy.

3. Drink safe, treated water.

4. Stay up-to-date on vaccinations to protect against common infections.
