Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the death of renowned environmentalist and Padma Shri awardee Tulsi Gowda, who passed away at the age of 86 in her native village in Karnataka. "Deeply saddened by the passing of Smt. Tulsi Gowda Ji, a revered environmentalist. She dedicated her life to nurturing nature, planting thousands of saplings, and conserving our environment. She will remain a guiding light for environmental conservation. Her work will continue to inspire generations to protect our planet. Condolences to her family and admirers," PM Modi wrote on X.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also paid tribute, saying, "I am deeply saddened by the demise of environmentalist Tulsi Gowda. Remembering her love and care for the environment, I pray for eternal peace to her departed soul."

Who Was Tulsi Gowda?

Tulsi Gowda was born in Honnali village of Karnataka's Ankola Taluk and belonged to the indigenous Halakki tribe. Despite never receiving formal education, her exceptional knowledge of plants, trees, and forests earned her the title of the “Encyclopedia of the Forest."

For over 30 years, Tulsi Gowda worked as a temporary volunteer in the forest department. Her dedication and hard work eventually earned her a permanent position, from which she retired at the age of 70. Over her lifetime, she contributed to environmental conservation for more than 60 years, planting over 30,000 saplings.

Recognition and Legacy

In recognition of her extraordinary efforts in protecting the environment, the Government of India honored Tulsi Gowda with the Padma Shri award in 2021, the country's fourth-highest civilian honor.

Tulsi Gowda's work and passion for preserving nature will continue to inspire future generations to care for the environment, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of environmental stewardship.
