Who Was Tulsi Gowda?

Tulsi Gowda was born in Honnali village of Karnataka's Ankola Taluk and belonged to the indigenous Halakki tribe. Despite never receiving formal education, her exceptional knowledge of plants, trees, and forests earned her the title of the “Encyclopedia of the Forest."

Her dedication and hard work eventually earned her a permanent position, from which she retired at the age of 70. Over her lifetime, she contributed to environmental conservation for more than 60 years, planting over 30,000 saplings.

In recognition of her extraordinary efforts in protecting the environment, the Government of India honored Tulsi Gowda with the Padma Shri award in 2021, the country's fourth-highest civilian honor.
