National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 to celebrate and honour the rich legacy of India's handloom industry and the contribution of weavers to the country's cultural and economic fabric. In 2026, the nation marks the 12th edition of this important observance. To mark this significant day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged every citizen to celebrate Handloom Day today with enthusiasm and joy.
He also appealed to purchase at least one handloom product, make a video about it and share it across the world and praise the efforts of Handloom workers. Talking about its significant role during independence, he talked about the Swadeshi Movement and its impact.
PM Modi links handloom pride
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday marked National Handloom Day by recalling the historic significance of August 7, 1905, the day the Swadeshi Movement was launched in response to the partition of Bengal during British rule. In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister urged people to remember the date, describing it as a symbol of India's journey towards self-reliance and indigenous enterprise.
In a video, PM Modi said, “August 7, 1905 ko desh ki azadi ke liye Swadeshi andolan ka prarambh huaa tha, angrezon ke khilaf deshwasiyon ne bahot badi ladai ladi thi, jan-jan jud gaya tha." (On August 7, 1905, the Swadeshi movement for the independence of the country was started. The countrymen fought a huge battle against the British, every person joined in.)

Tribute to weavers
On August 7, the PM also extended greetings on National Handloom Day and paid tribute to the country's weavers and artisans for preserving India's rich textile traditions. He wrote, "Today, on National Handloom Day, we celebrate India’s rich and vibrant handloom heritage. We also salute the skill, creativity and dedication of our weavers and artisans. For generations, they have preserved and enriched our traditions.
He further said, "Our Government will keep supporting the handloom sector, which is an important pillar of rural empowerment, women-led development and fulfilling the dream of an Atmanirbhar Bharat."
Encouraging the usage of handlooms, the PM said, "Do share your favourite handloom products and GRWM videos using #NationalHandloomDay, which will encourage those associated with the sector."
What is Handloom?
Handloom denotes the technique of creating fabric on a manually operated loom, without the use of electricity. It's a customary skill in which talented craftsmen weave threads (warp and weft) on a loom, typically found in their residences, to produce fabrics. This technique yields one-of-a-kind, artisanal textiles with a unique personality.
