Memorial Day 2025 will be observed on Monday, May 26, and while many in the U.S. look forward to the long weekend, backyard barbecues, and unofficial summer kickoff, the day holds a much deeper meaning rooted in remembrance, sacrifice, and national pride.

About Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday dedicated to honouring the U.S. military personnel who have died in service. It's not to be confused with Veterans Day, which celebrates all who have served. Memorial Day specifically remembers those who gave their lives for the country, a moment of collective reflection, gratitude, and respect.

History of Memorial Day

The holiday’s origins date back to the aftermath of the Civil War, which was one of the deadliest conflicts in American history. In the late 1860s, communities began holding springtime tributes, decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. This led to the creation of Decoration Day in 1868, initiated by Union General John A. Logan, who called for a national day of remembrance on May 30.

It wasn’t until after World War I that the day evolved into Memorial Day, broadening its scope to honour American soldiers who died in all U.S. wars. It officially became a federal holiday in 1971, with the observance moved to the last Monday of May to allow for a three-day weekend.

Significance and tradition

Beyond its historical background, Memorial Day remains a time to pause and appreciate the cost of the freedoms many enjoy. It serves as a powerful reminder of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, a day not of celebration but of solemn remembrance.

While traditions vary, many people visit cemeteries and war memorials, often placing American flags or flowers on graves. Cities across the nation host parades featuring military personnel and veterans. A national moment of silence at 3 p.m. local time is encouraged to reflect on the sacrifices made.

At the same time, the long weekend has also become synonymous with barbecues, family gatherings, and retail sales, making it a mix of commemoration and seasonal festivity.
