On this day, devotees should wake up early, bathe in the Holy River Ganga, and worship the Goddess Ganga by performing aarti and reciting Ganga's mantra. According to Hindu mythology, Ganga was descended to the Earth on Ganga Dussehra day.
When the powerful Ganga descended to the Earth, Lord Shiva caught the River Ganga in his hair to halt Ganga's fall and prevent her from sweeping the entire Earth away. Subsequently, Lord Shiva freed Ganga to enable her to fulfill her task of cleansing the cursed souls of Bhagiratha's forebears.
