Fairy Tale! What makes the white wedding such a romantic favourite

Think of white weddings and you think of beautiful churches with a calm and elegant mood. The bride adorns herself in a white dress of her choosing with perhaps a veil and a flowing trail. Her groom sports a black tuxedo or suit, looking dapper to the core. The bride may wear a beautiful tiara or flowers in her hair, which lends a dainty look.

From Aashka Goradia and Brent Goble’s fairytale wedding to Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s surreal union, these beautiful nuptials tugged at the heartstrings. Looking so perfectly carved out for each other, Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza reinstated the wonder of marrying your best friend, while Amrita Arora and Shakeel Ladak, and Arshad Warsi and Maria Goretti also had a white wedding to respect the brides’ culture.

Desire for magic

The charm of a white wedding cuts across religion and cultures. Every bride wants to feel like a princess – and in many cases it’s a Disney princess! Rather than the traditional bright poppy coloured Indian outfit, it is the white wedding gown that becomes the object of desire.

This trend is growing as brides make sure to make their white wedding dream a reality minus the church ceremony! “The craze around Catholic weddings is that every bride that has come to us has dreamt of walking down the aisle in a white flowing ethereal gown. It has also become a huge trend because in Indian weddings one really doesn’t get to do that. People wish to do something unique as they witness varied things happening around the globe along with increased availability,” says Karleo, a bridal wear designer studio.

Occasion matters

Like any number of traditions, the white wedding dress comes to us straight from the Victorian era—in fact, from Queen Victoria herself. Nowadays clients want gowns not only for their special days like weddings but also for smaller occasions or if they are attending someone else’s wedding or party.

“We have got clients who want to wear white gowns to their high tea events. Gowns have become a very common feature in every woman’s wardrobe now and you are sure to see one hanging down,” says Karleo. Gowns are here to stay because they are classics and classics never fade. You can play around with textures, colours, embellishments, but a classic will always be a classic. If not for her wedding day, the bride could wear a gown for any other event too, such as the cocktail or engagement party or the reception.

Pure palette

One can play around with the white wedding theme by experimenting with beautiful fabrics in pastel hues – right from a blush pink to an off-white chamomile to a very pale leaf-green or a nice butterscotch. These hues provide a hint of colour and are ideal to adorn yourself with.

“You can go with the traditional veil along with it or you can opt for a selection of hair accessories like a hairband, a hairpiece or a nice beaded embellished hair comb. It adds that little touch of bling to the whole softness of the attire,” says Karleo. Then of course, depending upon the look you can game up with your shoes, to match your whole popsicle look.
