According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati took this form to perform intense penance (Tapasya) to win the love of Lord Shiva. She is depicted holding a rosary (Japamala) in one hand and a water pot (Kamandalu) in the other, symbolising patience, knowledge, and self-restraint.
