Mumbai: Under fire from all corners on the innumerable potholes on the city’s roads, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) every year tries to come up with new technologies and materials to fill up potholes caused by shoddy roadwork by its contractors.
This year, the MCGM is trying out the new “Reactive Asphalt” from Austria by Ecogreen Infrastructure and Development Pvt Ltd. The technology has been successful in filling potholes in three minutes flat. Not only that, it comes with a guarantee of 2-3 years.

The remedy was successfully applied to potholes on Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road filled with rain water. Ecogreen executives filled three rain water-filled potholes in nine minutes without stopping the traffic. In a short time, the potholes disappeared and traffic movement became smooth, according to an MCGM official present at the demo.
Company executives told FPJ that the warranty of the potholes is approximately 2-3 years. The product costs Rs 130 per kg and if manufactured in India the cost will fall to Rs 80 a kg. According to the company executive, a pothole measuring one sq m by 10mm (depth) would require 2.5 kg of material only.
A civic official added, “In order to make Mumbai pothole- free we have to decide on an internationally proven technology to get rid of the menace of potholes. Hence we are looking at a variety of technologies. Reactive asphalt is one of them.”
The civic administration has been receiving a number of complaints from citizens on a daily basis over the abysmal state of roads. If such a technology is used it would make the lives of motorists and commuters simple and also result in less number of accidents on roads.
