Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A terminated police constable, posing as a railway police inspector, visited the residence of deceased Raja Raghuvanshi in Sahakar Nagar on Thursday night, claiming to be his friend.

Wearing a khaki uniform with three stars on his shoulders, he spoke to Raja’s father while Raja’s mother informed her sons over the phone.

When Raja’s brothers reached home, the man introduced himself as Bajrang Lal Jat, a resident of Ratangarh, Rajasthan, and claimed to be a friend of Raja.

However, when asked to produce his ID and other documents, he became nervous. Rajendra Nagar police were informed, and a team reached the spot and detained him.

According to Vipin Raghuvanshi, around 6 pm on Thursday, their mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, called to say that a police officer was at their home. “She said he had three stars on his shoulders. When she asked his name and ID, my father was already speaking to him,” Vipin said.

Suspicious, Vipin, along with his brother Sachin, rushed home. The man claimed to be a railway inspector posted in Ujjain and introduced himself as Bajrang Lal. He said he had met Raja at the Mahakal temple in 2021 and had come to express grief over his death.

Vipin doubted his story, pointing out that 2021 was during the COVID lockdown and Raja had not been travelling. When asked for his ID card, Bajrang failed to produce one and tried to change the subject.

Truth revealed in police interrogation

Additional DCP Alok Kumar Sharma said that, based on a complaint by Vipin Raghuvanshi, an FIR was registered against the fake inspector under Sections 204 (personating a public servant) and 205 (wearing garb or carrying a token used by a public servant with fraudulent intent) of the BNS.

Police verification revealed that Bajrang was not a railway police officer but a former police constable who had been terminated from service. During interrogation, he allegedly admitted that after reading about Raja’s death on social media, he came to the house wearing an inspector’s uniform, claiming he wanted to express grief to the family.

The police are investigating further to determine his actual motive for visiting the house in uniform.
