Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): A team of cyber and crime branch unearthed a big betting racket after Saturday midnight being operated from Geeta Colony.

Taking advantage of the forthcoming elections, BJP flags were plastered all over the Gurukripa House and one could hear drum beats. The raid unearthed Rs 21.25 lakh in cash more than 4 kg of gold, over 1 kg of silver and 30 mobiles all of which were seized. Though the kingpin succeeded to flee, five of his accomplices have been arrested from the spot. SP Satyendra Kumar Shukla has suspended Jiwajiganj police station-in-charge, Gagan Badal, for his negligence over the illegal business.

†Notorious miscreant Ravi Sindhi alias Ravi son of Laxmandas Pamnani was running a satta (betting or speculative) business here. When the crime branch team reached Gurukripa House, women of the family raised BJP flags and played drums refusing to open the door. The police persuaded them to open the door by posing as poll officials who had to do some election-related work. As soon as the team reached inside, they were stunned to see that the betting accounts were being written on a large scale on 30 phones. Five youths were writing these bets in registers. Calculators were also found inside the house. A large number of accounts and speculative slips were found in the register.

The police recovered Rs 14 lakh 2 thousand 450 from there in cash and Rs 7 lakh more were seized from the Nanakheda located office of Ravi Sindhi that was also raided at the same time. On searching the house, a safe was found in the basement of one of the rooms. In this, 4 kg one hundred 79 gram of gold and 1 kg 129 gram of silver were found. 2 kg gold was in the form of 280 biscuits, while a number of assorted jewellery pieces like bracelets, mangalsutras and chains made up the rest. A total of 35 silver coins were also found.

Prakash son of Lalaram Shrivastava resident of Kazipura, Inder son of Laxmandas Pamnani, resident of Geeta Colony, Yash son of Laxmandas Pamnani, Yash son of Laxmandas Lakhwani and Kailash son of Jamandas Chatwani resident of Harikrishna Nagar Colony of Godhra, Gujarat were apprehended from the spot.

According to sources, the names of some policemen are also cropping up for not doing their duty properly. Sources informed that constables Manish Yadav and Shyam Nirmal have the responsibility of collecting information about betting in Jiwajiganj, but they were unaware of the racket. Similarly, head constable Raman Pal's duty was in the FRV of Geeta Colony area and he too was not aware of this business. The role of these policemen is being investigated. If their involvement is proved, then they can also be punished, a police officer said. The racket reportedly had the blessing of a powerful unnamed BJP leader.

Probationer IPS Vinod Kumar Meena said that the raid was carried out on receiving concrete information.
