Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a move aimed at modernising higher education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a directive to all universities and affiliated colleges to comprehensively revise their academic curricula.

The initiative aligns with the transformative vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The letter, undersigned UGC secretary Prof Manish R Joshi emphasised the urgency of overhauling academic programmes to keep pace with rapid technological advancements and conceptual innovations.

The revised curriculum is expected to shift the focus from rote memorisation to critical thinking, creativity and multidisciplinary learning. It also aims to reduce content overload, integrate essential life skills and encourage experiential, hands-on learning.

"To stay ahead in the evolving educational ecosystem, curricula must be regularly updated and responsive to the needs of students and society," the letter states. Universities are urged to ensure that their programmes are thoroughly reviewed and prepared for implementation in alignment with NEP 2020.

The UGC has also advised institutions to consult key documents during this revision process, including the National Credit Framework, the Higher Education Qualification Framework, and the Curriculum and Credit Frameworks for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes. Institutions are encouraged to embed skilling in academics through Short-Term Skill Modules, Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Programmes, and internships.
