Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A rare and complex vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) surgery, usually costing Rs 5 lakh and performed only in big metro cities like Delhi or Mumbai, has been successfully conducted free-of-cost at Indore’s MY Hospital.
The surgery was led by Dr Arvind Ghanghoria, dean and professor at MGM Medical College, along with his team Dr Farid Khan, Dr Naveen Gupta and Dr Kripa Shankar Tiwari.
The patient, a 30-year-old woman, had been suffering from continuous urinary leakage for a year after undergoing a hysterectomy. She also showed symptoms like fever, abdominal pain, infections and fatigue.
Investigations revealed a 1.5x1.5 cm fistula between the bladder and vagina. The team performed a laparoscopic transabdominal transvesical VVF repair, a minimally invasive procedure requiring advanced expertise and careful planning. According to Dr Ghanghoria, this surgery not only corrects the defect but also significantly improves the patient’s quality of life.
VVF is a rare and socially distressing condition, often resulting from gynaecological surgery or childbirth complications. By making such procedures free and accessible, Dr Ghanghoria, who also consults patients in the OPD said, ‘To serve humanity is the highest form of service. A surgeon is a creator and our duty is to serve the needy.’
