Indore (Madhya Pradesh): The Central Government's PM Surya Ghar free electricity scheme is gaining significant traction in the Malwa and Nimar regions, with thousands of electricity consumers opting for rooftop solar net meters.

Over the past year, more than 13,000 consumers have installed rooftop solar panels and the government has disbursed Rs 87.69 crore in subsidies to 11,287 beneficiaries. West Discom managing director Anoop Kumar Singh said that Indore has seen the highest participation in the scheme.

"Currently, 14,000 consumers in Indore and 27,500 across the company's jurisdiction have installed solar panels at their homes. The scheme has encouraged a shift towards renewable energy, reducing dependence on coal-based electricity while promoting environmental sustainability," he said.

Under PM Surya Ghar Scheme, households installing a three-kilowatt solar power plant receive a maximum subsidy of Rs 78,000, with Rs 30,000 for the first KW, Rs 30,000 for the second and Rs 18,000 for the third KW.

Larger solar plants can also be installed, while the subsidy is capped at Rs 78,000. Officials highlight that subsidy applications are being processed swiftly, ensuring that consumers receive financial support on time. The scheme has encouraged more households to switch to solar energy, helping them generate electricity for themselves and reduce power bills.
