Dhar (Madhya Pradesh): A delegation of eight tribal women sarpanch from Dhar district, led by Lok Sabha MP and Union minister of state Savitri Thakur, recently met President Draupadi Murmu at the Parliament House.
The village heads, dressed in traditional Bagh print sarees, represented their communities at the ‘Panchayat se Parliament’ programme organised by the National Commission for Women in collaboration with the Lok Sabha Secretariat and the Ministry of tribal affairs.
During the event held in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, the delegation presented President Murmu and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla with a portrait of Lord Birsa Munda, Bagh print sarees and the famous Khurasani tamarind from Mandu. Minister Savitri Thakur shared her political journey and emphasised the importance of empowering women representatives.
She said that understanding the Constitution and democracy would inspire these women to contribute more effectively to the development of their communities. The programme aimed at empowering women and encouraging their participation in nation-building, especially following the enactment of the Nari Shakti Vandan law.
About 500 tribal women representatives from 22 states participated in the event, showcasing the collective strength and potential of women in governance. Notable attendees included National Scheduled Tribe Commission chairman Antar Singh Arya and women and child development minister Annapurna Devi.
