Indore (Madhya Pradesh): As the festive season approaches, the Indore district administration has issued strict guidelines regarding the production and sale of idols.
Sculptors have been directed to make and sell only those idols crafted from traditional clay, in line with environmental guidelines and the directives of the National Green Tribunal.
These instructions were given during a meeting held at the Collector’s office on Friday, chaired by Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Roshan Rai. Officials from the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), Pollution Control Board, and representatives of the Murtikar Sangh were also in attendance.
ADM Rai informed the sculptors about pollution control measures and regulations that must be followed to ensure an eco-friendly festival..
Only traditional clay, as described in ancient scriptures, will be permitted for making idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Durga.
The use of plaster of Paris (PoP), baked clay, or any kind of chemical material has been strictly prohibited. Sculptors have been encouraged to use natural alternatives such as paper and eco-friendly colors. All forms of chemical and toxic paints will be banned during the festival season.
Authorities also made it clear that production, sale, transportation, or import of idols made from PoP or chemically-treated substances will not be allowed in the district.
Sculptors who have already produced idols using PoP or chemical materials must submit a written report detailing their current stock. Going forward, no new idols made from banned materials can be created, and local bodies will carry out verification to ensure compliance.
