What do meteorologists say?

According to IMD Bhopal’s scientist VS Yadav, the cloud cover usually increases night temperatures rather than lowering them. Over the past two nights, cities like Bhopal, Ujjain, and Indore have experienced warmer temperatures. Currently, northern winds are blowing at an average speed of 8 to 10 km/h, contributing to the chills. However, according to Yadav, there is no rain forecast for the next two days.

Senior meteorologist Ved Prakash Singh stated that this time, the Gwalior, Ujjain, and Chambal divisions will experience the most severe cold. These regions will also face cold waves with icy winds.

‘Mawtha’ to be witnessed in late December

This season, severe cold and ‘Mawatha’ (winter rain) are expected in Madhya Pradesh. Starting from December 20, the state will enter a period of intense cold, lasting until January. During these 40 days, cold wave conditions with icy winds are likely for 20 to 22 days. The Ujjain, Gwalior, and Chambal divisions will experience the harshest cold due to direct icy winds from the north. Additionally, light winter rainfall (Mawatha) is expected in the latter half of this period.

Temperature record

On Monday-Tuesday night, temperatures rose in many cities. Ujjain saw a significant increase of 6.2 degrees, reaching 16°C. Bhopal's temperature increased by 4.3 degrees to 12.8°C, while Indore experienced a 3.3 degree rise to 16.5°C. Other cities like Pachmarhi, Sagar, and Damoh also reported increases of 3 degrees or more.

On Tuesday, southern districts like Chhindwara, Seoni, and Betul, as well as regions such as Malwa-Nimar, Bundelkhand, and Baghelkhand, saw cloudy weather. However, according to Yadav, there is no rain forecast for the next two days.

Chills after cyclone's impact fades

In smaller towns, temperatures stayed below 12°C. For example, the temperature was 8.1°C in Nowgaon, 9°C in Piparsama, and 9.5°C in Tikamgarh. Major cities recorded temperatures of 10.7°C in Gwalior, 12.6°C in Jabalpur, and 12.8°C in Bhopal.

Despite the temporary warmth, residents should brace for colder days ahead once the cyclone’s impact fades.
